Meet the Boss – Prom 2027 Season Launch Q&A Part Two
In Part One of our Prom 2027 Season Launch Q&A, we talked to MK Prom owner Neil about an incredible first season in the new shop, the challenges that came with rapid growth, alterations and how the team has prepared for the new season.
This time, we’re looking forward.
The first Prom 2027 dresses are already arriving, appointments are being booked and there are some really interesting new colours and styles starting to appear.
We sat down with Neil again to talk about what’s new, what’s catching his eye, why girls are starting their prom shopping earlier and what exactly MK Prom’s one-dress-per-school promise means.
So Neil, the new 2027 dresses are arriving. What are you seeing?
Lots of variety, which I really like.
I think one of the biggest changes in prom over the last few years is that there isn’t really one particular “prom look” anymore.
Some girls want the full princess dress, some want fitted and sparkly, some want really simple satin and others come in saying they definitely don’t want anything that looks like a traditional prom dress.
Then, of course, they try something completely different and sometimes that ends up being the dress they fall in love with!
That’s why having so much choice works for us.
We don’t want to tell a girl what she should wear to prom. We want to give her enough choice to find out what makes her feel amazing.
And from what we’ve seen arriving so far, Prom 2027 is looking really exciting.
Are there any new styles that are catching your eye?
Yes, definitely. One of the most interesting is the drop waist.
We’re starting to see more drop-waist dresses coming through for 2027 and I think it’s a really interesting new look.
The waist sits lower before the skirt opens out, so you can still have that big prom-dress moment, but the shape is completely different from a traditional ballgown.
It’s also one of those dresses where looking at it on a hanger really doesn’t tell you the whole story.
Once somebody puts it on, the shape suddenly makes sense.
I think we’re going to have quite a few girls come in saying, “I’m not sure about that,” and then be very surprised when they actually try one.
And what about colours? Anything we should be watching for 2027?
Chocolate.
Definitely keep an eye on chocolate.
We’re seeing some beautiful chocolate and rich brown tones appearing in the new collections and they look fantastic.
It’s quite different from some of the colours that have dominated prom over the last few seasons, and I think it could be one of the surprise colours for 2027.
Having said that, I’m always slightly cautious about declaring a “colour of the year”.
Social media can suddenly make a particular colour incredibly popular, but ultimately the most important colour is the one that looks amazing on you.
That’s another reason having so many dresses is important.
You can come in convinced you want one particular colour, try four or five completely different ones and suddenly discover something you’d never even considered.
Quite often, that’s the one.
With over 1,500 dresses, how on earth do you decide what to buy?
With difficulty!
We don’t just walk around the trade shows choosing dresses that we personally like.
Our customers actually teach us an enormous amount every season.
We see which shapes girls feel comfortable in, which colours disappear quickly, which dresses girls pick up but don’t necessarily buy and which ones they walk straight past until one of our stylists persuades them to try it on.
You learn very quickly that what looks great on a hanger and what looks amazing on a girl can be two completely different things.
We use all of that when we’re buying for the following season.
We also deliberately buy across different styles, sizes and price points.
There’s no point saying you have over 1,500 dresses if they’re all variations of the same thing.
Choice has to mean real choice.
You stock several different designers. How much difference is there between them?
Quite a lot, which is exactly what we want.
For Prom 2027 we’ve got collections from designers including Hermione, Gino Cerruti, Tania Olsen, Prom Frocks, Simply Divine, Goya and new to us this year Gorgeous Grace.
They all bring something slightly different.
But honestly, most girls don’t walk through our door particularly worried about the name sewn into the dress.
They want to know whether they love it.
They care about how it looks, how it fits and, probably most importantly, how it makes them feel.
That’s how it should be.
Our job isn’t to sell somebody a particular designer.
Our job is to help her find her dress.
You’re already taking appointments for Prom 2027. Are girls really shopping this early now?
Yes, definitely. Prom shopping has definitely moved earlier. We’ve been booked up most weekends throughout September and we’re already seeing October half-term appointments booking up and once girls start talking at school about where they’re going and what they’ve bought, everything starts moving quite quickly.
I don’t want girls or parents to think they have to panic and buy a dress in September or October, because they absolutely don’t.
But there is a genuine advantage to coming earlier.
Choice.
You’re seeing the collection when it’s at its biggest.
And with us there’s another reason as well — our one-dress-per-school promise.
So how exactly does the one-dress-per-school promise work?
It’s very simple.
Once a girl buys her prom dress from us, we won’t sell the same dress in the same colour to another girl attending the same school.
We record it on our system.
For a lot of girls that’s incredibly important.
You can imagine spending months looking forward to wearing your dress and then arriving at prom to discover somebody from your year is wearing exactly the same one.
Obviously, we can’t control dresses that somebody buys somewhere else.
But we can control what leaves MK Prom.
And we do.
So does coming earlier give girls an advantage because of that?
Yes, naturally it does.
Particularly if you’ve already got a specific colour or type of dress in your head.
Once that dress and colour combination has been sold for your school, it’s protected.
That doesn’t mean somebody coming later won’t find another amazing dress. With the amount of choice we have, I’d be pretty worried if we couldn’t!
But the earlier you come, the more of the complete collection you’re going to see.
So my advice is always the same.
Come when you’re ready, but don’t think you automatically have to wait until January.
We’re seeing more families travelling quite a distance to visit you. Why do you think that is?
I think a big part of it is choice.
Milton Keynes is obviously our home, but we now have families travelling to us from Northampton, Bedford, Buckingham, Aylesbury, Leighton Buzzard, Luton and much further away.
If you’re going to spend an entire day travelling around several smaller shops hoping each one has something different, sometimes it makes more sense to travel to somewhere with over 1,500 dresses under one roof.
Then there’s the experience around the dress as well.
You’ve got the choice, the fitting rooms, the stylists, the one-dress-per-school protection and, as we talked about in Part One, the fittings and alterations can all be handled here too.
You really don’t need to travel to London or halfway across the country to have a huge choice of prom dresses.
What would you say to someone thinking they could just order a few dresses online and try them at home?
It’s a completely different experience.
A photograph on a website can’t tell you how a dress is going to feel on you.
We see girls walk straight past dresses on the rail all the time, then one of our stylists says, “Just try this one for me.”
Ten minutes later they’re standing in front of the mirror saying, “This is it.”
That’s the bit you can’t put in a cardboard box.
Our stylists know the dresses. They know how different styles fit and they’ll often suggest something that the girl or Mum would never have picked from the rail.
And I think actually choosing your dress should be part of the whole prom experience.
It’s supposed to be fun.
A huge showroom and 1,500 dresses could also sound quite overwhelming to some girls?
Absolutely, and we’re very aware of that.
Not every girl wants a loud, busy shopping experience.
Some girls are naturally shy, some have anxiety, some are neurodivergent and some simply don’t like crowded shops or being the centre of attention.
That’s why we offer quiet appointments.
If there’s something we can do to make the experience easier, tell us.
We’d much rather know beforehand and make the appointment work around the girl.
We’ve got eight dressing rooms now, which gives us much more flexibility.
Finding your prom dress should be exciting.
It shouldn’t be something you’re frightened of doing.
And what if someone wants the MK Prom experience but their budget is smaller?
That’s exactly why we have MK Outlet.
It’s under the same roof and gives families another option, with a huge choice of prom dresses at much lower prices.
I actually take a lot of pride in the Outlet. I work closely with our suppliers throughout the year to find opportunities and negotiate the best deals I can, so we can pass that value on to our customers.
It isn’t about giving someone a lesser experience because they have a smaller budget.
You still come in, try dresses properly and get the same help finding something you feel amazing in. The difference is simply the price point.
I’m very conscious that every family has a different budget, and prom should never become a competition about who spent the most money.
Whether you find your dress in MK Prom or MK Outlet, the important thing is that you absolutely love it and walk into your prom feeling brilliant.
Finally, what would you say to a girl thinking, “I’ll leave it until after Christmas”?
You absolutely can.
We’re not going anywhere!
But if you’re excited about Prom 2027 and you want to see the collection while the choice is at its biggest, there’s really no reason to wait.
Come in and try things.
Try the dress you think you’ll love.
Try the one you think you’ll hate.
Try the drop waist. Try the chocolate dress.
Listen to your stylist.
And occasionally listen to Mum as well — yes, I said it!
Most importantly, enjoy it.
You don’t have to know what you want before you walk through our doors.
That’s what we’re here for.
